UNFORGETTABLE:

NURSE. FARMWIFE. MOTHER. GRANDMOTHER. GREAT-GRANDMOTHER.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? — John 14:1

THE NURSE.

“Caring for another’s well-being is the purest form of healing—where compassion becomes the cure.”

Ellie lived this truth every shift she worked at Cass County Memorial Hospital and every time a neighbor knocked on her farmhouse door in need of care. Her gentle touch and patient explanations quelled fears that no bandage ever could, turning uncertainty into comfort.

When her beloved husband, Bill, faced his cancer diagnosis in 1964, Ellie marshaled those same nursing skills at home—enlisting her children in his care, bedside vigils, and steady encouragement that restored him to upright steps again and again. Even long after she left the hospital walls, she volunteered with the Red Cross and American Legion Auxiliary, carrying her bedside manner into every corner of her community. In Ellie’s hands, healing was never just a procedure—it was an act of love.

THE WIFE.

“To love not just in moments of joy, but to walk hand in hand through every storm—that is the promise of a lifelong commitment.”

From the snowy midnight drive Bill made to win her hand, through years of farm work and shared laughter and tears, Ellie and Bill embodied steadfast devotion. Together they built a home where challenges were met side by side—weathering the storms of pain and illness. Their New Year’s Eve elopement was only the first step in a journey defined by mutual respect and unwavering support. Even in grief, Ellie carried their bond forward, honoring a love that never wavered.

THE MOTHER.

the heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which we will always find love and forgiveness for each other.

“Parents rarely let go of their children, so children let go of them. They move on. They move away. The moments that used to define them – a mother’s approval, a father’s nod – are covered by moments of their own accomplishments. It is not until much later, as the skin sags and the heart weakens, that children understand; their stories, and all their accomplishments, sit atop the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives.” – Mitch Albom

GRANDMOTHER.

“In the stories they share and the wisdom they impart, grandparents sow seeds of heritage and harvest memories that bloom for generations.”

Whether it was Ellie’s kitchen or corncrib, her farm became a gathering place where grandchildren and great-grandchildren leaned in to catch tales of early Iowa winters and the rhythms of rural life. She celebrated every milestone—from their first steps to college graduations—with the same wide-eyed wonder she once showed on her own blind date. Her laughter filled assisted-living hallways as readily as it had on the deck at her home, reminding every generation that family history lives on in shared moments. Through her stories, Ellie handed down roots that will continue to flourish in hearts yet to come.

"Remembering all the good chats we had over the 40 years of doing your mom’s hair. Lots of confiding and all the great advice. One of my favorites was when Jill was born and I was a typical first-time mom. Ellie says to me, for your baby gift, I will come down to your house and babysit Jill while you and Marvin go out. What a wonderful gift!"

HER LEGACY

We all wonder whether our lives truly make a difference or if we’re fulfilling our purpose on earth. In “Gifts You Left Behind,” Lisa shows how simple acts of love, faith, and kindness become enduring gifts that inspire long after we’re gone. As we honor our mother’s example and remember all who have gone before us, may we strive to leave such gifts behind for others to cherish.
